Amber Vittoria on AI Art

Published at: December 16, 2022

Amber Vittoria, an artist and poet whose work draws on her relationship to femininity, emotion, and identity, weighs in on AI art in this tweet thread. Some highlights of her views:

On AI art stealing from artists, she says: "I type my name and work into an AI and it outputs work that may be inspired by me, but by no means looks like a direct ripoff of my work. As visual beings, we are all inspired by each other (which is 1000% okay), but not all humans know the line of inspiration versus direct copy. Thus far, AI is on the right side of that line; it does a far better job of not directly ripping off my work."

On AI art replacing artists, she says: "If you’ve used any form of digital editing, you are using a form of artificial intelligence. Anyone who opts for using AI themselves over an artist is equivalent to anyone who opts to take a photo on their phone and edit it themselves over an artist: these are not the potential clients we want as artists. AI is not easy. I encourage those hesitant about AI to play with it, like you would any other new medium."
