Apple Hints at '3D Mixed-Reality World'

Published at: November 16, 2022

Apple have hinted that a "3D mixed-reality world," that sounds very similar to a Metaverse, may be coming soon based on current job listings and recent patent filings. According to Coin Telegraph, more that 30 positions have been listed on the Apple job page relating to augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) over the past two weeks. The tech giant is seeking both software and hardware professionals to work in its Technology Development Group (TDG), with one job opening in particular referencing a "3D mixed-reality world."

Meanwhile, patent filings from the United States Patent and Trademark Office tell us that in August this year, Apple Inc. trademarked both 'Reality One' and 'Reality Pro.' Both are described in the filings as 'photographic and optical apparatus and instruments' and 'virtual and augmented reality headsets, goggles, and glasses.' These plans have been filed through a Delaware Shell Company in a tactic often used by large technology companies to help keep their future plans under wraps.

But what will this look like? According to Forbes, Apple Inc. are taking steps towards building an AR world, as opposed to the VR world proposed by Mark Zuckerberg's Meta. This would mean a more open environment in which data, information, and games are superimposed and 'visually augmented' over the top of real world experiences.
