"Charlie Bit My Finger" NFT on Bitcoin: A Blast from the Past?

Published at: June 17, 2024

The iconic 2007 viral video 'Charlie Bit My Finger' becomes an ordinary NFT.

The famous "Charlie Bit My Finger" video from the 2000s surged to the headlines again as some anonymous NFT creators inscribed the clip of this viral video on the Bitcoin blockchain network. This piece, originally tokenized into a non-fungible token, gained huge popularity among NFT collectors and crypto traders in the bull run of 2021.

On June 17, Ord.io, a digital marketplace to explore and interact with Ordinals inscriptions on the Bitcoin blockchain, announced that the "Charlie Bit My Finger" video has been preserved on Bitcoin forever. The big question is will it will capture as much attention?

A Throwback to 'Charlie Bit My Finger

"Charlie Bit My Finger—Again!", also known simply as "Charlie Bit My Finger" or "Charlie Bit Me", is a 2007 viral video often cited as the most viewed YouTube video. Viewing alone crossed over 897 million views as of October 2022.

This 55-second video, online dubbed "First nail bite," shows British toddler Harry holding his baby brother Charlie. It is a sweet moment until Harry places his finger in Charlie's mouth, Charlie chomps down, and Harry exclaims, "Ouch, Charlie," and then, "Charlie, that hurt.".

In an interview with The New York Times, Howard Davies-Carr explained that he was just filming his boys doing everyday things. For instance, on the day this video was made, Charlie bit into Harry's finger while they were watching TV after playing in the garden. Davies-Carr admitted that he did not at all consider his son's celebrities, but it was that video that turned them into a brand.

Originally, Davies-Carr had made the video just to share with the boys' grandfather in America. He has said it was private, but after the number of requests from people, including his inquiring parents, he decided to open it up to the world.

Turning 'Charlie Bit My Finger' Into an NFT

In 2021, the Davies-Carr family transformed that viral video into an NFT on the Ethereum blockchain and listed it for auction. They asserted that the highest bidder would retain ownership of this piece of internet history.

The auction had 11 distinct accounts that placed a total of 187 bids. Of these, the final bidding war ensued between two users identified as "meme master" and "3fmusic. Ultimately, "3fmusic" took the top spot with a bid of $760,999. Proceeds from the auction were supposed to go towards university fees for Charlie's two younger brothers, Jasper and Rupert. Now, "Charlie Bit My Finger" is an ordinary NFT.

Here again, the nostalgia and random charm of "Charlie Bit My Finger" pique the interest of the NFT community. Only time will tell.
