The European Union spared no expense during the organization of their first gala held in the Metaverse. It is understood that a huge $408,000 was spent by the European Union Foreign Aid Department on a Metaverse, with a grand opening gala taking place on November 29th, though according to the few attendees on Twitter, only six people showed up.
A reporter writing on EU foreign aid for Devex, Vince Chadwick tweeted about his lonely experience at the gala, in which he was "alone" and engaged in "bemused chats" with the few other guests. The Metaverse, named Global Gateway, had been covertly launched with EU staff in October. According to Devex, the initial staff thoughts and reactions to the 30 second promotional video left a lot to be desired, with anonymous employees saying it was "depressing and embarrassing."
The intended impact of an EU foreign aid Metaverse is to raise awareness of the European Union and the work that they do. Their target audience are 18 - 35 year olds who may not currently have an interest in politics, and it was the hope that this group could be engaged through a more modern platform.
