First Metaverse Wedding in the Sandbox

Published at: September 24, 2022

Groom Clarence Chan and Bride Joanne Tham sealed their vows with a kiss at a virtual altar during their metaverse wedding in The Sandbox. Family and friends, the wedding officiator, and even the bride’s pet dog, were present in pixel form – and also in physical form – at the couple’s hybrid wedding this month that straddled both the physical and digital worlds. Said Mr Chan, “We had this idea of a crossover because we wanted to create scenes that both reflect and exceed what we can do in (real life).”

The couple hosted their 70s disco glam wedding on 17 September 2022 at “The Alkaff Mansion” in the metaverse, a heritage venue in real life that has played host to some of Singapore's most quintessential garden weddings over the past decades. This is the first wedding held in The Sandbox, and the couple marked the happy occasion by planting the Singapore flag in their digital wedding venue. “What’s exciting in the metaverse wedding, is that you're not limited to coming in your physical human form or wearing typical clothing. You can come as alien, a robot, a polar bear… the possibilities are endless,” Mr Chan said.
