As a whole, women are deeply underrepresented in technical roles and the technology sector, but is this the case in the early building stages of the Metaverse? McKinsey are gathering information to better understand the gender roles and dynamics at play, and although according to their data women are currently spending more time in the Metaverse, women still represent a minority in the Metaverse economy.
As well as female consumers being more active in the Metaverse than their male counterparts, the data also tells us that female executives are more likely to implement Metaverse initiatives within their companies. Despite this, research conducted over the last five years reveals that 90% of the leadership roles in organizations shaping the Metaverse are held by men, with male-led Metaverse companies receiving $107 billion worth of funding in comparison to $5 billion funding for women-led firms.
It is paramount that we address the gender gap in leadership roles whilst in the early stages of building, and as early indicators have shown, women are a powerful user base already. Diversifying leadership and ensuring that all voices are heard will be key in building a virtual world that has the potential to impact the global economy and create new and more equitable opportunities for all.
