Pudgy Penguins, a collection of Ethereum NFT profile pictures (PFP) initially introduced in July 2021, has revealed a preview at Art Basel in Miami for its upcoming 3D browser gaming experience, named Pudgy World. The alpha release is scheduled for 2024.
Following controversies surrounding its original owner, Pudgy Penguins underwent a buyout and leadership change last year. Subsequently, the company established an executive advisory board, secured $9 million in funding, distributed plush penguin toys to over 2,000 U.S. Walmart and Hot Topic stores, and generated viral videos with millions of views across social media platforms.
Pudgy Penguin enthusiasts can now enter the virtual realm of Pudgy World from its lobby. Upon the full release, NFT holders and plush toy owners can adopt a 3D character resembling their collectibles in the game.
Pudgy World will be free-to-play, allowing gamers to explore, customize characters with purchased traits, and participate in a narrative-driven journey, as stated by the company.
The storyline of Pudgy World will revolve around two characters, Pudgy and Peaches, as they embark on yet-to-be-revealed adventures.
CEO Luca Netz expressed the significance of the alpha launch for the Web3 and NFT space, emphasizing that Pudgy Penguin owners can engage with their Pudgy Toys without needing prior knowledge of the underlying blockchain technology.
Pudgy World will leverage Matter Labs’ Ethereum layer-2 scaling protocol zkSync, known for its zero-knowledge blockchain technology providing enhanced user privacy compared to traditional transactions on public networks like Ethereum.
