Roblox in Possible Money Laundering Scandal

Published at: April 02, 2023

The popular children's game, Roblox, has run into some legal trouble over money laundering allegations. This news has undoubtedly left fans and gamers extremely shocked and confused. Apparently, more than 300 users are allegedly laundering money by purchasing fake in-game items using Roblox in-game currency, Robux. The court filing was submitted to a San Francisco federal court last week and originates from a case filed two years ago.

In 2021, a lawsuit was filed against Roblox on behalf of a girl who was under 18 years old. She bought in-game items from another player when Roblox then deleted the items and took a 30% cut of the profits - and she was the only player this had happened to. Roblox agreed to settle the issue with a $7.5 million payout, although not all are eligible due to over 311 accounts displaying 'suspicious' behavior. The court is expected to settle this deal in the coming months.

Roblox has denied the allegations of money laundering, saying that there are systems in place to prevent it. Instead, they have said that the cause is due to players being able to sell Robux back to Roblox when they reach 30,000. Robux can also be bought and sold on the secondary market, leading to potential scams. Other well-known games, such as Fortnite, have run into similar issues.
