Sam Altman Says ‘India Outpacing the World’ in AI Adoption

Published at: April 05, 2025

India is making waves in the artificial intelligence landscape, and OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, is taking notice. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman expressed amazement at the rapid AI adoption in India, stating, “What’s happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity—India is outpacing the world.”

India: The Second Biggest Market for OpenAI

Earlier this year, while sharing the stage with India’s Union IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Altman emphasized India’s significance in AI and business. He revealed that India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market, with user numbers tripling in just one year.

From Skepticism to Recognition

Altman’s recent praise marks a shift from his 2023 remarks, where he initially deemed India's ability to develop a foundational AI model similar to ChatGPT as “totally hopeless.” However, he later clarified that his statement was about the challenges of competing with established AI giants in terms of cost-efficient models.

Now, Altman believes that India is well-positioned to be a leader in the artificial intelligence revolution, particularly with advancements in AI model training and reasoning capabilities.

AI Development Costs: A Promising Future

Addressing industry concerns about AI affordability, Altman projected that the cost of AI development will drop by nearly 10 times within a year. He acknowledged that while training advanced AI models is still expensive, progress in AI distillation and hardware efficiency is making it more feasible for widespread adoption.

India’s Role in the AI Revolution

Altman believes that India is not just a consumer but an innovator in AI. From AI chips to models and applications, Indian developers are actively contributing to the global AI ecosystem. He encourages India to pursue AI advancements across all levels of the tech stack, ensuring the country remains at the forefront of all about artificial intelligence.
