Sega recently announced their first foray into blockchain gaming with the planned launch of a digital card game using the popular Sangokushi Taisen series IP. Blockchain-based gaming, also known as play2earn or P2E gaming, hit max hype last year and projects scrambled to develop their own games, but the market realized pretty quickly that a good game is hard to ship and most of them aren’t much more than token pump and dumps. The P2E meta faded quickly, replaced with “play-and-earn” followed by “play-and-own,” and the meta continues to evolve as developers try, and fail, to ship a Web3 game that actually works and people want to play.
