Sotheby's Relaunches Glitch NFT Auction

Published at: April 14, 2023

Sotheby's has launched a new NFT auction, "Glitch: Beyond Binary." This is a new iteration of their previously canceled auction, "Glitch-ism," which faced criticism for a lack of diversity and female representation in the featured artists. Markedly, "Glitch-ism" featured artist Patrick Amadon called out the famous auction house for their selection of Glitch artists and withdrew his work from the auction, despite the bid on his artwork being $8,500 at the time. Amadon received praise for using his platform as a call to action, and Sotheby's listened.

Sotheby's new auction, "Glitch: Beyond Binary," features a range of artists with a focus on diversity and inclusion. Additionally, to ensure more inclusion going forward, Sotheby's has enlisted Glitch Artists Dina Chang and Dawnia Darkstone to help with the selection process in the future. Both artists are also featured in "Glitch: Beyond Binary," along with XCopy, Rosa Menkman, and neurocolor. Sotheby's acknowledged that artists who engage in glitch art includes artists from diverse backgrounds, and said that they often use their art as a form of "political and identity expression."

"Glitch: Beyond Binary" will feature 34 unique NFTs and the bidding will open on April 19th at 2pm EST.
