The Japanese video game development company, Square Enix, has recently shown a major interest in web3. They recently signed a $52M deal with the mobile game developer and publisher, Gumi, and have partnered with Oasys, a software company that will provide node validators. Yosuke Matsuda, president of Square Enix, mentioned that their group has multiple blockchain games under development, all based on original IP. The play-to-earn gaming industry has gotten a bad rap for the past year or so, but it appears to be hanging on. More and more players are warming up to the idea of receiving rewards such as cryptocurrency or NFTs for their gameplay, and companies like Square Enix are determined to find a way to make that work
