The Vatican Library is using NFTs for Digital Archiving

Published at: April 28, 2023

The Vatican Library has partnered with NTT DATA, a global technology service provider, to digitalize the library's large collection. They are using AMLAD, Advanced Metadata Library and Digital Archive for Museums and Libraries, to digitize the collection of cultural assets. The aim of the partnership is to preserve valuable pieces and also make them more accessible globally. Although the Vatican Library and NTT DATA have been collaborating since 2014 to create the vast digital archive, they have only recently embraced web3. In February, they launched the Vatican Library Web3 Support Project. The project offers NFT rewards to those who support the library and uses blockchain technology to connect the library to its supporters across the world.

The NFTs offered as rewards are high-resolution images of 15 cultural heritage items owned by the Vatican Library. Text is also provided to explain the significance of the item represented in the NFT. Ultimately, the partnership is revolutionizing digital archiving. With AMLAD, the library can preserve assets and data, and connect and reward supporters. Additionally, it simplifies search systems and allows the process to be more user-friendly and accessible. Significantly, the project is a shining example of how blockchain and web3 technology can preserve valuable human history whilst making it more accessible to the public.
