Top NFT Sales of 2022

Published at: January 14, 2023

Although 2022 wasn't a great year for NFTs and cryptocurrencies and we are still very much in a bear market, it isn't all bad news for digital tokens and assets; according to Forbes, sales increased by 10.16% over the year and although most of the more expensive assets traded last year were sold in early 2022, we saw some big sales following the Ethereum merge in September.

1. 2022 saw the second-highest NFT sale ever recorded with the sale of "Clock," a single NFT depicting a timer counting the number of days WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, has spent in prison. The piece sold for $52.7 million and will be used to fund Assange's defense team.

2. Alien Crypto Punks are rare NFTs part of the blue-chip CryptoPunks collection recognisable by their blue skin tone. CryptoPunk #5822 sold for $23.58 million, a record sale for a CryptoPunk.

3. XCopy's All Time High in the City, depicts Death as a ferryman. This piece sold for $6.2 million on January 1st, 2021, despite initially minting in 2018.

With new types of NFTs entering the market, gaming and metaverse collectibles growing in popularity, and the rise of AI, maybe there's more big sales in store for 2023.
