Donald Trump's Bitcoin-themed NFT sneakers sold out soon after they were listed. According to the official website, the "Trump Crypto President High Tops—Bitcoin Orange" sneakers sold out right after they became available.
Priced at $499 a pair, secondary sales are now happening on sites like eBay, where the range runs from $700 to $2,500. One weird listing even has the sneakers priced at $69,999.
Trump showcased these limited-edition Bitcoin sneakers in Nashville at the Bitcoin Conference, which had been a part of his campaign for the upcoming elections. Apart from supporting Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies, this move places him as a pro-crypto.
The sneakers were sold by his company, CIC Ventures LLC, and had two variants: 1,000 pairs of "Bitcoin orange" for $500 a pop and 4,000 pairs of "luxurious black" for $299 each. One could also buy the sneakers in Bitcoin.
As "Shark Tank" star Mark Cuban commented, these sneakers are not just merchandise but a political statement.
The former president's pro-crypto stance pays off, as he reportedly raised around $25 million in the Nashville Bitcoin Conference, with donations still pouring in. American businessman Gary Cardone donated 12.8 bitcoins to Trump's campaign, over $850,000.
The same is the case with former PayPal President David Marcus, who went on to publicly back Trump and his Republican Party. This is noteworthy because Marcus had earlier identified himself with the Democrats. He said that he changed his perspective given the new information.
"Many—including a former version of myself—get trapped in a mental framework that becomes their identity and prevents them from evolving their thinking with new facts and information. I finally broke free from it," said Marcus.
